About The Hotchkiss School

A top college preparatory school, Hotchkiss serves both boarding and day students. Located in Connecticut, they have long had a close relationship with Yale University. WHile they are no longer a true feeder school for Yale, their graduates still go on to attend top colleges around the country. They are known for their academically rigorous curriculum.

Required Materials

Online Application Portal: You must begin by submitting an inquiry form online. You will then be able to schedule an interview and gain access to the main application.

Standardized Tests: Hotchkiss is test optional for students entering 9th grade, but they do accept the SSAT and ISEE.

Interview: Required. These can be on-campus or virtual.

Parent Interview: Not required, though a written parent statement is.

Recommendations: Required from your English and math teachers (this year’s or last year’s), a principal or counselor, and a personal recommender.

Transcripts: Required.

Other materials: Essay responses are required as part of the application. Arts or sports supplements may be included for students with particular ability in those fields.

Graduation Requirements: 

  • 4 years of English
  • Math through the third level, including geometry, or the equivalent
  • 2 years of laboratory science
  • Humanities & Social Sciences: Prep Humanities, Lower Mid Humanities
  • A classic or modern foreign language offered at Hotchkiss through the third-year level (as determined by placement)
  • Visual and Performing Arts: Prep and Lower Mid Humanities (dance, theatre, music, photography, or studio art)
  • The human development course

Note that these are the minimum graduation requirements. We recommend, and colleges prefer to see, that students have taken four years in each of the core academic subjects: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and a foreign language.

  • Math options include analysis, discrete math, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and advanced topics.
  • Computer science options include software engineering, artificial intelligence, and independent study.
